ON AGING WELL
Recent studies on lifestyle habits for aging well in women underscore the importance of a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and avoiding smoking.
Research from the Nurses' Health Study revealed that women who maintained a healthy body weight, followed a Mediterranean diet, and exercised regularly from midlife to later years experienced slower cognitive decline. Similarly, the Tromsø Study found that women who adopted healthy lifestyle habits like not smoking, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight had a higher chance of living to age 85.
Additional findings show that women with better episodic memory in older age tended to have adhered more closely to a Mediterranean diet and engaged in higher levels of physical activity during midlife. Another study focused on postmenopausal women found that following the Mediterranean diet and staying physically active were linked to better body composition, including reduced body fat and increased muscle mass.
The American Diabetes Association also recommends that older adults with diabetes engage in aerobic, weight-bearing, and resistance exercises to improve physical function and quality of life.
In conclusion, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking are essential for aging well, contributing to improved cognitive function, longevity, and overall physical health in women.
